Speaking a Second Language in Public
The other day I was grocery shopping and I heard a mom speaking Spanish to her daughter. She said: 'Mccenzie, ¿quieres comprar applesauce?' (do you want to buy applesauce?) And the girl responded: 'Si, por favor.' (yes, please) The woman had a heavy accent in Spanish and she didn't know the word for applesauce, but that didn't stop her from talking to her daughter in another language in public. I wish I would have commended her on her effort, she's well on her way to raising a bilingual child by providing a strong foundation in Spanish.
Sometimes, I feel embarrassed when a stranger waves to my daughter and I prompt my daughter to say 'Hola' instead of 'Hello'. But I want her foundation to be strong too and most importantly, I want her to not be embarrassed to speak another language in public and a big part of that is normalizing this by speaking other languages often.
Some people that don't understand the language might think it's rude, but honestly, I feel doing what's best for your child is more important.
